Rain’s Rant: Wonder why your fav band hasn’t toured your town?

On behalf of those tasked with sorting, forwarding and answering band emails, requests and proposals of marriage, I want to take this moment and kindly ask you all to cease and desist from sending the following email:

I’m sorry to tell you kids but that’s not a question that is easily answered. Oh yes I’m sure Guido J. Rockstar has no higher wish than to set foot in North America. (Why they aren’t happy becoming gods of rock and ruling Europe is beyond me. They’d certainly have a longer career and a better chance at a home life.)

The problem doesn’t lie in their lack of trying to reach that goal of playing at your local riot house. The problem, dearest darlings, is with us!

We are lazy fuckers aren’t we? We bitch and complain that we aren’t getting the musical experiences we want and yet we do nothing about changing the antiquated system that regulates how the music gets to our doorstep.

For too long now we have been more than happy to be directed by some faceless conglomerate telling us who to like, where to get it and how much to pay for it, while they pilfer the profits leaving the artists with little else to do than to toil on. Doesn’t leave much in the way of funding a tour abroad now does it?

Oh it’s not just the record industry raping rock and roll.

We have all become so used to our “we want it all, we want it now and we want it for free” lifestyle that we think nothing of sharing the latest yet to be released song or video with all our friends. Gives you a sense of screwing the big guy.

Yeah, well you just added to the plight of the band you won’t get to see this summer because you stole their potential revenue. No real sales means no evidence of popularity which means no one’s going to fund your favourite band’s tour because they don’t believe there is a real audience to recoup the costs.

Sorry kid, you’ll just have to go to hot topic, buy the overpriced t-shirt and wear that while you watch youtube.

Awe, now I know it seems I’m picking on you, I’m not. There’s at least a million of you fuckers all doing the same thing. So don’t feel so alone.

If you really want the chance to see whoever the object of your current obsession is, why don’t you try something a little different. Oh I know it’s hard but just try.

Go to the band’s website and buy the music directly from THE BAND; TELL everyone you know how fucking awesome it is. BUY the swag from THE BAND. Wear it all day, everyday except on Sunday (you can’t really rock on Sundays).

TRADE live show bootlegs with friends - DON’T SELL THEM – trade (way back about 600 years ago this is the method that made Metallica famous). Yeah we all regret that now, but it’s a proven method. Request the band’s swag at your favourite stores. Irritate the shit out of your local radio station.

In short my little duckies, unless we all stand up and start supporting the artists and music we want to hear and see and unless we start doing it en masse, next summer’s festival season is going to be yet another alt/emo wank fest.

I don’t know about you lot but I’ve had enough of baking in the sun without access to a clean bathroom for 8 hours and having to listen to Hinder again.
